Sino-Burkinabe health cooperation (1973-2025): dynamics, impacts, and challenges

This research is part of the context of historical and geopolitical relations between Africa and Asia, in particular the health cooperation between Burkina Faso and China. Initiated in 1973, this cooperation has been interrupted by diplomatic ruptures, before being resumed in 1994 and again in 2018. The objective is to analyze, from a historical and prospective perspective, the evolution of this partnership, which has moved from a logic of medical assistance to a model of technical and scientific cooperation. The methodological approach is based on a qualitative and diachronic analysis, based on the exploitation of documentary sources and on a comparative perspective with the principles of the Bandung Conference. The results highlight notable advances in hospital infrastructure, staff training and technology transfers, but also underline the persistent challenges linked to financial and technical dependence and the need for Burkina Faso to build sustainable health sovereignty. These results contribute to a better understanding of the dynamics of South-South cooperation. They highlight the strategic importance of strengthening health independence in the long term.
